When Signs Now – Tucson gained an opportunity to compete for being the signage provider for the Tucson Festival of Books, they leapt at the opportunity. Dedicated to improving literacy in southern Arizona, this event held every March features more than 400 authors and presenters and draws over 100,000 visitors to its location on the campus of the University of Arizona.
The directors of the nonprofit festival were not only looking for competitive pricing, but also for a resource offering graphic design expertise, in-house fabrication capabilities and annual storage of their reusable signage. As it turned out, Signs Now – Tucson delivered all of that—and considerably more!
Starting months ahead of time, Signs Now – Tucson assumed responsibility for creativity, production… and new ways to bring efficiency to an event with a size and complexity that stretched all those involved to their limits. Hundreds of signs would need to be reused, crafted anew or developed at the last minute due to late-hour sponsor and vendor additions.
Working with students in the University of Arizona’s Management Information Systems program, Signs Now – Tucson helped develop a signage database and barcode tracking system. It enabled the event staff and sign maker to monitor the location and condition of existing signs and queue the production of new ones.
Signs Now – Tucson also implemented swooper flags for wayfinding—thus reducing the festival’s reliance on printed maps and improving the experience of eventgoers. In addition, they employed magnets to affix fabric banners to tent sides. Not only was this solution able to withstand the region’s strong spring winds, it also gained the approval of tent vendors who disliked the previous tape solution and resulting sticky residue.
The sign maker’s initiative and ingenuity earned not only ongoing business from the Festival of Books, but also praise from its executive director: “Signs Now – Tucson’s customer service, attention to detail, creativity and overall professionalism are outstanding!”
