Catch the Eye of Prospective Customers with Outdoor Graphics & Displays

Catch the Eye of Prospective Customers with Outdoor Graphics & Displays
Most business owners instinctively know the value that outdoor advertising adds to the success of their operations. What they might not realize, however, is the degree to which scientific research supports their intuitions!
Commissioned by a leading provider of package delivery and office services, a study by a major research company discovered:
  • Over three quarters (76 percent) of shoppers said they had entered a store or business they had never visited before based simply on its business signs.
  • Nearly three in four consumers said that they had told others about a business just because of its business signage.
  • About seven in 10 (68 percent) respondents believe that a business’ outdoor graphics and other outdoor advertising signage reflects the quality of its products or services.
  • Almost seven in 10 (67 percent) consumers surveyed said they had purchased a product or service because an outdoor sign caught their eye.
  • Nearly 60 percent of shoppers said that the absence of business signs deters them from entering a store or business.
So, how can you make the most of outdoor advertising—including window graphics, business signs and outdoor graphics? Here are three tips on design from a leading expert in the field:
  • Strengthen branding with compelling colors. The choice of color plays a huge part in a well-designed business sign. “Studies have shown that 80 percent of the recognition of a trademark is due to its color,” the expert notes. Think of “Coke red” or “McDonald’s yellow” as just two examples.
  • Improve readability with contrast. The expert says, “Most outdoor signs will include either text or graphics in the foreground, with a continuous background color. The contrast between these two items is critical to the viewer’s retention of the content.” For example, you might consider a dark color on a very light background, such as black on white, or the opposite of that with light lettering on a dark background.
  • Increase letter size for easier readability. This rule is especially important if you’re designing roadside signage or window graphics that will be displayed at a significant distance. “A good rule of thumb might be 10 feet of viewing distance per inch of letter height,” the expert says. “So retail signage lettering with 10 inches of height may have the best impact at 100 feet distance.”
