ALBAT Training Facility, Medway, Ohio

MARCH 2017

Within their power! Signs Now – Beavercreek/Dayton, Ohio delivers multiple signage solutions to a training facility for electrical workers—capping off the effort with a suspended HDU monument sign.

In late 2016, ALBAT—the American Line Builders Apprenticeship Training Committee—sought to brand its educational campus with signage. The facility, which trains linemen and other outside workers for the electrical construction and utility industries, had minimal identification.

In addition to four post-and-panel signs for wayfinding and three sets of dimensional letters to identify buildings, the folks at ALBAT wanted to highlight their branding initiative with a large monument sign. And, for good measure, they wanted it suspended 15 feet off the ground in between two utility poles at the entrance to the campus!

Signs Now – Beavercreek/Dayton, Ohio got the call from ALBAT's management after being referred by a general contractor with whom the Center did business for many years.

While the school's post-and-panel signs in PolyMetal™ and custom-formed plastic dimensional letters were fairly routine, the monument sign was everything but. The detailed design featuring the school's logo would require intricate routing. Measuring 90 inches wide by 60 inches tall, the sign's weight was definitely a factor, given that it would be suspended. And, of course, for the outdoor application a weather-resistant material was a must.

Waterproof and lighter in weight than wood alternatives, Signs Now – Beavercreek/Dayton, Ohio selected HDU (high density urethane) foam and promptly began the cutting, routing and painting needed to replicate ALBAT's logo. With the completed, two-sided sign on hand, one significant challenge remained: installation.

While rigid mounting was originally envisioned, ALBAT disclosed that the utility poles to which the sign would be attached sway in high winds—threatening to fracture the HDU. The solution? Signs Now – Beavercreek/Dayton recommended suspending the sign on flexible cables, even going so far as to secure the permitting that the installation variance required!

Empowered! The sign maker's all-round capabilities, problem-solving focus and willingness to go the extra mile impressed ALBAT so much that Signs Now – Beavercreek/Dayton is now first in line for future signage projects!
