Keep your messaging and graphics short and breezy with custom flags.

A close relative to the banner, custom flags have been used for centuries to denote allegiance to nations, teams, causes, companies, and more. And while they’ve performed this job dutifully, they also make great additions to your wayfinding, advertising, and roadside signage strategy.

Outdoors, feather flags and pennants call attention to your business or organization because they’re often in motion. It’s why they’re often called feather banners, feather flag banners, and banner flags (though most of these terms are interchangeable).

At Signs Now, we can custom-design feather flags to your specifications, whether you plan on using a succession of them to lead people to your storefront, or just want to announce a limited-time offer. So, continue scrolling to learn more about how flags and pennants can fit your unique needs, and what attributes to consider when ordering them.

What’s the difference between pennants and feather flags?

Pennants are commemorative flags, traditionally used to show support for a particular athletic team. They’re typically 5” x 12” and in the shape of an isosceles triangle (the type with two sides of equal length), unlike feather flags which resemble – you guessed it – a feather.

As years have passed, the list of possible applications for pennants has grown; university students display them in dorm rooms as a show of school spirit, while businesses will employ them during celebratory events or festive sales. Usually, when companies utilize pennants in their marketing efforts, they install many at once, lining them up in concert with each other.

Feather flags are generally larger, and more versatile in their possible applications.

What does a feather flag consist of?

We’ll start with the flag itself. While we can make a feather flag banner out of any material you’d like, we recommend polyester, as its resistant to inclement weather and UV rays.

Another crucial part to consider is the base. Feather flags can have square bases, cross bases, cross bases with added weight, and ground stakes. Square bases are best on flat, smooth surfaces, making them an ideal choice for indoor environments. Need stability outdoors? Stakes are the way to go, assuming you have somewhat porous terrain to work with.

Cross bases are better suited to indoor environments, though they can be placed almost anywhere if they’re weighted. If you plan on experimenting with different locations, or transporting your flags regularly, a cross base is likely your best option.

Last but not least, the flagpole determines the rigidity of your flag’s material. Aluminum is a great example of a sturdy, yet lightweight metal that facilitates quick setup and teardown.

What are the most common sizes?

Note that the following sizes do not include the height of the base, as per industry standards.

  • 9 ft. x 1 ft.
  • 10.5 ft. x 1 ft.
  • 14 ft. x 1 ft.
  • 18 ft. x 1 ft.

However, please note that each Signs Now location offers a slightly different range of sizes, so please call us on (615)-391-9978 to find out the specific sizes we offer in your area.

Some popular events and businesses that call for feather flags include:

  • City-wide festivals
  • Concerts
  • Dealerships
  • Grand openings
  • Job fairs
  • Open houses
  • Sporting events
  • Retail stores
  • Sales
  • Universities

How long do feather flags last?

As with anything else that braves the elements of the outside world, it’s difficult to predict the longevity of your feather flags. Your principal concerns as a flag owner will be the wind, sun, and negligence. Though it may not seem like it, feather banners need to be properly maintained.

Avoid rain, snow, or heavy moisture. Wet polyester becomes much heavier, putting strain on stitching and the fabric’s weave. This could potentially cause tearing or loose threads to come undone.

Assuming you wash your feather flags regularly, and take care to air-dry the material (rather than tumble-dry), you can expect your collection of flags to last two years or more.

What about plain, old regular flags?

We’re glad you asked. At Signs Now, we can help design an elegant, rectangular flag to represent your association, municipality, club, or corporate headquarters. Our graphic design team knows the ins and outs of translating ideas into visual representations.

We also offer golf flags, school flags, as well as flag banners displaying your family crest.
